I don’t make resolutions…

at the start of a New Year, but I do have a few rituals.  I eat less. I drink less. I throw junk away.  I try to do this in January and it makes me feel like I have a lot more options.  I don’t know why exactly.  Yesterday (with my son’s help) I got rid of a lot of crap. Ellis thankfully did all of the heavy lifting and errands, the part of cleaning that I really loathe.  He’s my butler this week for various reasons.  He’s a decent butler.  However, he’s on his phone a little too much and he showed up two hours late, but we still got the job done and had a leisurely lunch together.

Here are some BEFORE and AFTER shots of my studio and few nook and cranny images of new favorite spaces.  Good Luck with whatever you need to get rid of in your life. Life is short.

My Grandmother’s funky purse from the 60s.  It needs some repair.

I like my space messy and yet, having a few clean horizontal surfaces feels like big progress.

My son, Ellis helped me clean the studio today to earn the change from a $20 on our coffee run.  I think he got a pretty awesome hourly rate.

I always find that when I am in the mood to clean and sort my studio and it brings me joy instead of dread that it’s good for me creatively.  It means that I am making room for new possibilities.  A little extra real estate.  A clean surface with a sketch book and pencil on it just makes me swoon.  I don’t know exactly what is coming next, but 5 bags of garbage and 2 bags of recycling out the door is a great way to start a new year.

one corner of my studio: before & after

Yesterday I didn’t feel remotely creative.  Over the weekend I showed my studio to my niece and she thought it was cool but really disorganized.  I usually don’t mind my space messy but when I stepped in to the studio yesterday I realized she was entirely right.  It was not very inspiring. There was a lot of garbage around.  And I didn’t know what textiles I had for working on a current project.  So, yesterday when I cleaned and hauled out two large bags of garbage and recycling I did sort of feel like an organizational Rock Star.  When I don’t feel creative, I clean.  I still have a lot of spaces to organize, but it’s a start and doing one chunk at a time is so much less overwhelming than thinking I need to do the whole space.  I was told once that when you have the desire to get rid of things that you are making room in your life for new possibilities.  I wonder what’s next?
